The Show Me, Tell Me Questions
During your test you will be asked two questions about the vehicle. They may be either “Show me …” which will be asked while you are driving and which involves a demonstration, or “Tell me …” in which case you must explain how you would do something. These are the questions and their answers:
Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Explain that you would switch on the hazard warning lights and exit the car to check them.
Tell me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
Explain the you would operate the brake pedal with the ignition on and either look for reflections in windows, garage doors, etc, or ask someone to look for you.
Tell how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Explain that with the engine running you would check that the wheel turns easily.
Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
Explain that with the ignition and headlights on, you would operate the switch on the lighting stalk; you would use them only if visibility is below 100 metres.
Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.
Explain that you with the ignition and headlights on, you would pull the lighting stalk towards you firmly; a blue light would show on the dashboard.
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
The pedal should not feel spongy or slack; the brakes should also be tested as you set off and the vehicle should not pull to one side.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
In the manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold.
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the central part of the head restraint is level with the eyes or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the width of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Explain that with the ignition on you would switch on the lights with the left hand stalk, then you would walk round the vehicle to check.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system.
Explain that there would be a warning light.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick / oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against the minimum / maximum markers.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Identify high/low level markings on header tank.
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
Identify reservoir, check level against high/low markings.
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would check that the horn is working.
Push the button! (Try to avoid startling other road users.)
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would clean the front windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Pull wiper stalk towards you and hold it.
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the front windscreen effectively.
Turn the fan and temperature controls fully clockwise, and push the button to direct air to the front screen.
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would demist the rear windscreen.
Push the rear screen demist button.
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would clean the rear windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
Twist the end of the wiper stalk two clicks and hold it. (Remember to turn it off fully afterwards!)
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would open and close a side window.
Operate the switch on the driver’s door. If it’s raining make sure you demonstrate with the passenger window.
When it’s safe to do so, show me how you would switch on your dipped headlights.
Twist the end of the left hand stalk two clicks. Remember to turn them off afterwards.
